Last month, Scott Freeman was forced to resign as Chief of the Athens-Clarke County Police Department. ACC Manager Blaine Williams, who has the ability to fire and hire all county department heads, said he gave Freeman the choice to resign or be fired.
Williams said the resignation had been in the works for months, because there had been “an erosion in confidence in the chief.” This comes after Freeman made two controversial decisions in response to police violence this summer, most significantly when Freeman fired Officer Taylor Saulters for ramming Timmy Patmon with his car. This upset a large subset of ACCPD officers, who already didn't like Freeman’s communication or personnel decisions. Mike Hunsinger, 30-year ACCPD veteran, was named interim Chief. Williams and staff will begin taking applications for a new Chief of Police in October. How do you feel about policing in your neighborhood? Who would you like to see as the new Chief of Police?
